The Salesman

the salesman, asghar farhadiRelease Date: February 3rd, 2017

For Fans of: Smart cinema, Moral tales, Incredible film-making

See it With: A friend

Asghar Farhadi has made a name for himself as a filmmaker who tests the audiences moral compass and who will force you to think. Always compelling, this Oscar-winning director (for 2011's A Separation) yet again finds himself nominated in the Foreign Language Film category with The Salesman. Due to recently imposed border regulations in the U.S., Farhadi will not be attending the Oscars ceremony. In Canada, we have the opportunity to go see this film and to support his work, which always promises to be thoroughly engaging and intelligent cinema. Following a couple whose relationship is tested while they are both performing in a production of Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman", The Salesman is one Oscar-nominated film from this year that you must see.

Paterson

paterson, adam driverRelease Date: February 10th, 2017

For Fans of: Poetry, busses, Adam Driver

See it With: Your significant other

Jim Jarmusch has always upheld this title of the king of American independent cinema, so it's really saying something when his latest film is being considered one of his best. We're still sad that Paterson was overlooked by the Academy, as Adam Driver's performance was hands down one of the very best of last year (though the film only hits theatres in 2017). Nonetheless, if you're at all interested in the beauty of everyday life, elevated by a romantic, poetic bus driver, and his passionate wife, then Paterson is a film that will deeply touch you.

Clearly Fifty Shades of Grey left everyone longing for more, and this Valentine's Day, here we have it. Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) are still together and going strong, and we're going to guess, darker? If you read the books, you know what this is about. If you haven't read the books, you probably still know what this is about. See this movie if you want to be a part of the conversation and to enjoy some eye candy.

See it in: 4DX

John Wick was the action sensation that nobody saw coming, and this sequel promises even more of Keanu and his sexy hair. The success of the first film was good proof that Keanu is still a bonafide action star, and that we will watch anything he does. In the sequel, John Wick learns that there is a bounty put on his life, and we'll bet he will take out whoever is in his way to reverse this problem.

For Fans of: LEGO Batman, LEGO Robin, LEGO Alfred, LEGO Joker

See it with: Literally anybody

See it in: IMAX

The best part of The LEGO Movie is getting his own movie. That's right, LEGO Batman, voiced by Will Arnett, is coming to the big screen this month, and we'd argue that this is the Batman film we all need in our lives. The voice cast is perfection, with Will Arnett, Michael Cera as Robin, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, Ralph Fiennes as Alfred, Jenny Slate as Harley Quinn, and Zach Galifinakis as The Joker. This might just be better than Suicide Squad.

The Prince of Botswana, Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo) goes to school in England where he meets and falls in love with a British woman named Ruth (Rosamund Pike). The two get married, and it causes an uproar in Botswana where Seretse is about to be King and has just made a white woman his nation's Queen. This causes many problems for his country, for England, and for their marriage, but the two fight for equality and their right to be married and to run the country together. Also, David Oyelowo just gives the best speeches ever.

For fans of: Twisted horror, bizarre imagery

See it with: Friends

The visionary director Gore Verbinski who first scared our socks off with The Ring is back with a new original horror. It's been a while since we've seen a horror/thriller from him, but the trailer for A Cure for Wellness has us sold--this one is going to be good. About a wellness center in the Swiss Alps whose cures aren't quite what they seem, A Cure For Wellness is going to give us a lot to look at while keeping us on the edge of our seats.

Get Out

get outRelease Date: Feburary 24, 2017

For fans of: Satire, Key and Peele, Social Commentary

See it with: Friends

Jordan Peele's Get Out may be the film that we need right now. An over the top commentary on racism and social justice issues, the film looks like it'll be hilarious, frightening, and preaching the truth all at the same time. It follows a young bi-racial couple who go to visit her family estate, where African-Americans have a tendency to go missing. A sharp comedy writer like Peele will make a film like this work, and we can't wait to see the result.
