We think it's safe to say that Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 was one of the most highly anticipated movies, let alone sequels, of 2017 - and now that it's finally available to watch at home we couldn't be more thrilled! We've been looking forward to re-watching this one since we first clapped eyes on Baby Groot in the first teaser trailer. The whole crew is back - Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and our new favourite, Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). Where the first Guardians of the Galaxy seemed to come out of nowhere and became a huge surprise monster hit, this sequel had the weight of expectations to shoulder, and it meets the challenge and even exceeds expectations!
So if you somehow missed this one while it was in theatres, or even if you've already seen it and are considering a re-watch, here are our (spoiler-free) top 5 reasons to watch it!
1. Baby Groot's opening dance number
If you saw the tag at the end of the credits for Guardians of the Galaxy, then you know Baby Groot has some serious dance moves. We hoped that we'd see a fully-mobile Baby Groot shaking his groove thang at some point, and happily, writer/director James Gunn must have sensed this because the very first spectacular action sequence in Vol. 2 is mere background to Baby Groot's boogying! There's so much action, humour, and dancing swagger on display in this sequence, it definitely requires a re-watch!
2. Star-Lord's daddy issues
One of the big themes of both movies is family - the one you have, and the one you find. In Guardians of the Galaxy we saw many of the main characters come to grips with loss, and find solace in friendships that were made stronger through adversity. So what happens to that dynamic when an all-powerful supreme being (Kurt Russell) swoops in to announce that he's Star-Lord's biological father? We won't spoil anything here, but there's so much going on emotionally in this movie that we think a re-watch may be in order!
3. Cameos! Callbacks!
With a bigger budget comes a bigger cast, and James Gunn has taken full advantage in Vol. 2, introducing us to new allies, new enemies, and a number of surprising and delightful cameos that just may hint at events to come in future films -- or at least, we sure hope so!! There are also more than a few cool callbacks to the original that even the eagle-eyed may have missed, so if you did, there's no shame in seeing both movies again to catch all the references!
4. Stan Lee
It wouldn't be a Marvel movie without a cameo from the legendary Stan Lee, and Vol. 2 certainly doesn't disappoint! In fact, you can see Lee twice - and those truly paying attention will catch a reference to a past cameo in another Marvel feature, which may be hinting that possibly, just maybe, Lee's been playing the same character all through these appearances!
Bonus: Stan Lee himself reveals a hint about his cameo in Tanner's What to Watch from May 5th!
5. The tags and credits
Again, it wouldn't be a Marvel movie without a tag - a scene at the very end, usually after the credits have started to roll, that offers a callback, a hint at a future movie or tie-in, or just a humourous aside. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 raises the game to a new level, offering not only multiple tags from the hilarious to the hintful, but also animating the end credits themselves and filling them with "easter eggs" and MORE cameos! We recommend you save some popcorn and snacks till the very end, and settle in to enjoy this film to the bitter end!
