For two years, young Ashley Colton has survived on minimum wage jobs in south Texas while trying to prove she is fit to be a mother and regain custody of her son, bitterly convinced that he was taken from her because is poor. When she learns that her father is smuggling immigrants across the border, she is lured by the prospect of easy money into the role of a coyote. But her plan quickly goes awry and she finds herself stranded with a young girl whose mother disappeared in the late night river crossing. After trying to abandon the girl, Ashley begins to search for her missing parent, and the two of them retrace the steps of the immigrant's journey. When she learns that the girl's mother has drowned, Ashley takes the child back to her village in southern Mexico and along the way, discovers something she didn't even know she had - her own mothering instinct.
