Three people's stories take place at different times over a Mother's Day weekend. In the first, a drifter named Mark, who is fascinated with loggerhead sea turtles, comes to a quiet coastal town in North Carolina to preserve the endangered creatures. There he meets a businessman who gives him the support and companionship he's been missing and must decide if he wants to stay in this new town. The second story concerns the wife of a conservative minister who banished their adopted son after the boy revealed that he is gay. The woman is now overwhelmed by her husband's constant pontificating and the changes in her small town. In the last story, Grace plans to spend the weekend celebrating Mother's Day with her mother, while also trying to make contact with the child she gave up for adoption when she was a teenager.
